Meet the apprentice – Josh’s Story

At Ferguson Marine, we’re proud to support the next generation of skilled shipbuilders – many of whom are continuing a long family legacy in the industry.

Josh, a second-year welding apprentice, is doing just that. With his dad working at the yard and uncles also with shipbuilding experience, the industry has played an important role in Josh’s family life.

“My dad having worked in multiple yards in his time sparked my interest in working in a shipyard”, he says. “He helped me apply to Ferguson’s, and I’ve been here two years now.”

Josh has already worked on a range of shipbuilding projects. He’s also building vital workplace skills by working alongside experienced colleagues and external teams.

Of course, it’s not always easy, but Josh is clear about what’s helped him succeed: “Practice makes perfect".

Our apprenticeship programme offers young people the opportunity to build skills and contribute to Scotland’s growing maritime sector. We’re proud that so many of our apprentices are following in the footsteps of family members, helping to keep the tradition of shipbuilding alive in Inverclyde.
Applications for our 2025 apprentice programme are now live. You can find further information on how to apply in the Careers section of our website.
